Instaurada en 1857; uno de los complejos aún en pie del patrimonio industrial ovetense.
Inició su actividad en 1859 sustituyendo el alumbrado de aceite y petróleo que daban mal olor y escasa luz a las calles de la ciudad.
A principios del siglo XX, ya bajo el nombre de la 'Sociedad Popular Ovetense', esta fábrica suministraba a la ciudad gas, electricidad, yeso y asfalto, suponiendo un papel clave en el desarrollo de Oviedo.
En el año 1985 cesó su actividad, cediendo al paso de los años y el abandono.
